Avery finally made it to the cabin, her weekend alone. She cracked open a wine cooler took her sandles off.
Opened the french doors to the patio and took everything in. She climbed into the hammock with her pillow,
and sipped on her Bartles and James.
Just as she was getting off into a daze. The phone rings. She thought....who in the world would be calling
the cabin when they wouldn't know if anyone was here or not? So, she got up and answered, "Hello?" Deathly silent on the other end. She said, "Hello" again. Nothing, so hung up and went back to the hammock.
About five minutes had passed and she was just about ready to fall asleep and it's the phone again.
This time there was an answer. It said "Avery....you'll never know our secrets." , "Try to find them if you dare."
Avery didn't take this very seriously figured it was a prank phone call, though it did trouble her some.
Since who ever had called knew her name. But then again it's a small town and it could be someone of an
enemy that she didn't even know that she had. She sighed, and thought oh well. The phone didn't ring again
for the rest of the night.
She decided to call her friend Melanie. "Mel how'd you like to come over and we can have our own party?" Mel
replied, "You don't even need to ask!" Mel hangs up and before Avery know's it the knock at the door. And Mel
has goodies with her. Snacks for the entire weekend, movies and a restock on the Bartles and James.
"Mel I am so happy to see you girl!" They hugged. They got everything in the kitchen and in the fridge. Mel popped
open a cooler for herself and joined Avery on the lawnchair next to the hammock. "So Ave, what's new, I haven't seen
you for a while."
Ave replied, "Yah, I know, it's been busier than you know what at work." , Mel replied "Yah I know how that goes." They
sipped on their coolers, the breeze coming in over the lakeside. They both found themselves checking out Bob. Then
they looked at eachother and giggled.
Bob was a pretty good looking guy and fit too. With all those flowers he had. All the gardening he does with the vegetables.
Bob recently widowed and only in his early 40's. Avery and Melanie were in their early 30's. So it wasn't like there was no
possibility of them ever dating Bob. It was just a matter of having the opporunity at the right time.
Bob didn't have any kids, they weren't married long enough. His wife died in a tragic car accident, Hit a spot of sand on the
hillside over by BlueRidge Trail. She went over the cliff and the car completely burned and exploded. There was nothing of
her body remained except for a few teeth that they were able to identify. Along with the charred liscense plate.
It was hard to figure out how that sand had gotten there, could have come off a dump truck hauling sand. Who knows.
"I wonder if he had ever thought about dating again." Avery though. "I bet you he get's lonely sometimes over there.", "Seems like he doesn't have any friends."
Mel replied, "Remember he's friends with your brother, Seth." Avery replied, "Oh! Yah! I forgot about that.but still, you think it would be nice to have more than one friend on the Earth."
Didn't realize that we could not have commercial postings on here. So, I cannot sell my photography but
I can still post my pictures. ENJOY them anyway.
Avery was so thrilled that it was the end of the week. Her duties were finished and all her orders were in that the warehouse.
She said, " Good weekend. " to Ralph. He just replied as he always does when he's pre-occupied, "ummm - hummm." Not looking up. She just smiled at herself, cause at this point it was just a relief to get out of the office. It was like being caged up in the same position for 40 hours. And not having any breathing space. Yuck!
She had to stop at a few places on her way back to the cabin to get ready for theh weekend without her mom this time. It's every other weekend she spends without her mother. Which is also nice to have that alone time. Not so worried about doing something inappropriate to upset her. Not that Avery would ever do that.
Well, she had gotten her snacks, her soda's her sunscreen, the Sunday paper on a Friday. So, then she could lay by the lake instead of being on the deck the entire time. She drove in her red BMW. Most people in the world had black BMW's but she ordered one painted red.
She wanted to be different from all the other lake goer's.
Everyone knew she was the only one in town who has a red bmw. Georgetown, Nebraska was a town of less then 1000 people. There were only 4 churches in the city. She went to the Georgetown Evangelical Christian Church of Christ. If that wasn't a mouthfull as that was.
She went with her mom, brother Seth, and sister Liz.
We tease her about her name and call her Queen Elizabeth. And that she's married to King Herod. Of course that would never really have worked. Since Kind Herod is of Biblical times. He wasn't exactly the most respected King of his time either. Just thinking about it made her cringe.
A week later Avery was back at her job as a sales order clerk for a catalog company. As she was listening to the customer on the phone rag about the mistakes on her order, Avery dazed and lost in her own thoughts staring out the window looking at the berries on the crab apple tree that had a long ways to go before being rippened.
She finally caught herself dazing off again and quickly pulled herself back into the call. She retyped the order and passed it through to customer service blog who would then pick it up in the warehouse 5 blocks down the street on Greysound Road and 4th Avenue. It took
up a 1 mile radious and had trucks going in and out until midnight every night except for Sunday's.
Avery was so relieved when it was quitting time. Her boss, Ralph didn't need to remind her that she was dazing off again, because his
office was only a few feet away from hers. And he could easily see what went on. So, he just looked up at her out of the rim of his glasses like he always does, to give her a silent reminder. No more needed to be said.
Life at the lakeside is quite predictable. Avery was on the deck overlooking King Herod Lake in Georgetown, Nebraska. The hills behind rolled for miles where you wanted to find out how far they went. But she didn't have that kind of desire in her for something like that.
She'd rather be here on her deck on King Herod's Lake where things are predicable and simple. The way things should be and have been. Mom was in the kitchen making up a salad lunch to eat for the two of them outside.
She came out with the salads, the seasoned breadsticks and Ice Tea .... Raspberry Ice Tea. Both of their favorites. We sat in silence eating our meals it was the best way to eat a meal. The radio was in the background playing soft classical. Vivaldi - The Four Seasons.
Avery looked along the lakeside and saw the two girls Georgie and Theresa. Trying to build their sand castles but they were too close to shore of the lake and it kept washing away the sand. Which they finally realized that.
So they moved themselves up a little further on the beach and started all over again. They have nothing better to do with their time besides it's a vacation. Avery thought to herself. Avery also saw Bob on his deck with all of his flowers in bloom. Avery never saw a man that liked flowers the way that Bob did. It was quite unusual. But yet very beautiful at the same time.
As Avery's mind wanders about scoping out the beachside, she sees fishermen casting their rods out, knee-boarder's, tubing, skido's, and all kinds of people finding ways to enjoy the outdoors. The way things were meant to be. Things were about to change on King Herod's l ake and no one had any idea. Secrets would be revealed that have been kept hidden for years.
