What was and why was Paul's Thorn in the flesh given to him?

I am teaching a Healing the sick class out of our church, in our home and we are comming up to the hindrences of Healing. I wanted some feedback from people before I write a paper on this, because there are so many different opinions on what paul's thorn in the flesh was, and who gave it to him, why didn't God heal him, yadah yadah.. some even say Paul's thorn was an unconverted wife....... what do you think?

later I will prove my point but before I do I need feedback, opinions, challenges or uncertainty concerning Paul's eyesight, his thorn, and God's Grace given to him. and concerning Healing and  or enduring sickness  for God's glory...

I know there are many doctrines out there, please let me in on it and tell us what you believe concerning healing and Paul's thorn, and Paul's eyes...

and another question: Can You get rid of a thorn in the flesh once you figured out you have one, and who gave it to you?

growth is good...it streatches you and makes you ready to tackle tough issues...anybody want to tackle?

at the end I will answer but first you guys/girls...

Try "Christ The Healer" by Bosworth.  He covers the subject extremely well.  We used this as our text in a Divine Healing course I taught at a local WOF Bible College.

I am so very glad you are doing this!

Shortly after I was saved in 1986, I heard a minister speak about Paul's thorn and that he did not get rid of it, etc... My tummy turned. I thought, "Have I turned my life over to a God Who will not deliver me?!" I couldn't swallow the teaching. It just would not go down. I didn't realize then that the Holy Spirit was telling me not to accept it.

I endured that for years, until Brother K. Copeland set it straight one day on BVOV! I was standing in my living room saying "Yes! YES! YES!" Charles Capps does a great teaching on this, also!

In 2 Timothy 3:10-12 Paul himself says that he was delivered out of ALL his persecutions! (All means ALL in the Greek.)

Also, if one does a search, thorns refer to PEOPLE four times in the Old Testament. When we see who Paul was as Saul, I am sure he had a lot of folks upset at him. And everywhere he went folks didn't want him preaching because it rocked their current social system that was making them money!

The thorn came from satan... the Word says so.

I am VERY passionate about this topic and I am extremely glad you are doing this. As we witness and teach in the Body, having your posts here will give us something to point others to.

I am praying for your journey on this one!

    Blessings my brother!

Re: What was and why was Paul's Thorn in the flesh given to him?

I have a whole [long] teaching on that. But to keep it short and sweet without all the details here it is in a nutshell:

People read all kinds of things into the scriptures that just is not there.
The scripture plainly tells what the  thorn in the flesh was  ---
    A messenger from SATAN

And why? -  to buffet him.

The Lord had given Paul great revelations for the spreading of the gospel. But satan didn't want that. So because of the revelations he used people and situations  everywhere he went, to harass, cause  him trouble, and try to hinder him in everyway possible to stop him. He was beaten, shipwrecked, bitten by a poisonous snake that would quickly kill him, thrown in prison,  and so many problems, even left for dead  but God raised him up.
The thorn  was not any sickness or physicial ailment nor weakness. But outward attacks on  his  physical body to  destroy him and stop the gospel.

Also God did NOT tell Paul "No". People read that with religious glasses instead of sticking with the Word.
And Paul DID get delivered!  HALLELUJAHHHHHH !
The WORD, The SPIRIT, And PRAYER

Re: What was and why was Paul's Thorn in the flesh given to him?

Thanks everybody, the best books on the ministry of Healing are: besides the Bible and the Great Commission... T.L. Osborn's Healing the sick, F.F. Bosworth's "Christ the Healer" E.W. Kenyon's Jesus the Healer, Kenneth Hagin's Bible Study course on Healing, and many more... all these books have the answers,

    Let me rephrase the question:

What unscriptural teachings have you (personally) heard or read concerning Paul's Thorn, his eyes, etc... and WHERE did you hear it? what kind of church, teacher?...

We don't want to "kick against the pricks" when it comes to doing and teaching the Will of God,  Healing Is the Will of God.

Remove those thorns, you don't need to put up with it., satan is defeated, and God doesn't give sickness to keep us from pride, God doesn't teach us with car accidents, sickness, etc... that would be child abuse, no, God is a Good Father, and He gave us Teachers to teach, not bad things to teach us, God wouldn't use the devil's tools to teach us... the twisting of scripture has made paul's thorn an excuse not to rebuke sickness in your life, or any other demonic attack... the devil is a liar!

I haven't read any one those. Maybe I should if I get time. But I do know when I read the Word and pray, what the Lord speaks to me is not what I have heard from denominational churches and  in  most  pentecostal churches I have been in most of my life.  I agree Doc, that is not how the Lord works. It's against His nature to do evil  or allow evil to come on us just to turn around and heal us. I have heard things like the devil is God's unwilling servant ,but he will NEVER  serve Him. And I've heard   things like, when Paul was blind he never fully recovered and that was his thorn because he killed the Christians . God   HEALED him completely!
It is OUR responsiblity to take authority over the enemy , its not God's responsiblity. Its a cop out to say if God wants to do something He will do it and we  have  nothing to do with it. They are  unknowlingly accepting whatever the enemy wants to do to them.

The Word is for our instruction and teaches us,  not tragedy. Sure we may learn something the hard way but that wasnt GOD's way, which  is to learn and heed the Word and be sensitive to the Holy Ghost who is our Teacher.

He said " My grace IS sufficient" . He  did not say it wasn't, but  It IS SUFFICIENT  to deliver us from anything that may come  against  us  in this life.  There may be many troubles everywhere but if we use our authority and not give up,   He will delivers us out of  them all! Glory to God!

    Doctor_Jonathan:

I personally haven't heard teaching on Paul's thorn in the flesh that was unscriptural. However I have heard things like:  a friend of ours was sick in bed and his wife said "well I guess God knew he needed to get some rest so he made him get some", that was several years ago. At the time we were going to an Assembly of God Church. There was someone who was in a terrible wreck at a stock car race. The current pastor of the Assembly of God church was at the race when it happened. He stood up in front of the congregation and said he didn't have an answer to the family why God did that. It was the attitude of: you never know what God is going to do. It did not sit right with my spirit.  I am now attending a Rhema church and you would never hear our Pastor say something like that. Our Rhema pastor would say it's God's will to heal every time & all the time. Actuallly he did say that a week ago Sunday. Praise God!

I agree with you if God used sickness, car accidents, financial hardships, and etc to teach His children to me it would be child abuse. I always think of the illustration God gave me; you have a hot stove and you want your young child to know that it could burn them if they reach up to touch the pan on the stove. Do you take their hand and put it on the burner to show them it's hot and how bad it would hurt them? Or to teach them the danger of playing in the street to take them out to the road and let the oncoming car hit them so they learn it's dangerous to play in the street?? I would say that was child abuse and authorities would be all over that parent who did that, but everyday chritsians think of God that way. It grieves my spirit.

Praise God for the Truth you are speaking out!

However, if my child does not heed my warnings and still puts his hand on a hot stove or plays in the street and I am not able to
prevent thenatural consequences from occurring, then I as his parent will use that situation to teach a valuable lesson.
The bible tells us that God uses all things to work together for those who believe.... so although he will not cause such
situations, and in fact will tell us how to avoid such if we disobey He will use whatever happens for our benefit... even if that benefit is 'teaching us a lesson'!

Re: What was and why was Paul's Thorn in the flesh given to him?

There are many people who learn the hard way because they do not know what God's Word says...."My people perish for a lack of knowledge."  They will "get burned" or "hit by a car" because they are ignorant of what the Word says.  It can be tragic to learn this way because in it, the devil wants to destroy you, mame you, kill you...  God's best way to learn these things is by knowing what His Word says and then being obedient to His Word.  We often go through unnecessary things in our lives because we have taken what somone else has said about a situation, instead of taking what God's Word says.  The bottom line is we could save ourselves a lot of misery in life if we just knew God's Word better, believed it and then practiced it.

And we can learn by other peoples mistakes so we won't have to go through that too. If we are sensitive to the Spirit of God He will show us things to avoid many of the tricks and traps of the enemy!

Re: What was and why was Paul's Thorn in the flesh given to him?

I agree with doc and all who are agreeing with Gods word.He is Good all the time and gives us the choices to believe His word or the traditions of man which will make the word of God to no affect. It depends on us ! If we believe His word ,and He cannot lie, then we prosper in all areas  if we believe traditional thinking ,thats all we are going to recieve[ NO AFFECT ]at least not in any good ways. In 2002 I was hit from behind by a drunk driver while I was waiting on traffic so I could turn into my driveway. The last thing I saw before I went unconscious was headlights from a big truck in the oncoming traffic but I screamed THE NAME OF JESUS before  and when I woke up I was on the other side of the road, and the man in the truck could not believe we didnt hit head on  but there is POWER in the Name .He transported me and my car all the way back over to the opposite shoulder of the road to keep me and the truck driver from dying. No One can tell me the Word of God doesnt work.I Am living proof and thats only one of the times the word of God has kept me alive.Oh my God You are GOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil. No way did the Lord God put that messenger from satan on Paul! And oh yes Gods Grace is always sufficient!!!!!!!!Shalom brothers and sisters
